Greek Mythology and the English language!!!

If u like gifting people Trojan Horse, then tantalizing could be your Achilles heel.Wondering what could be the link between a horse and a demi-god?? Read on....

We all know that English language like any other language contains a lot of loan words borrowed from other languages. But what if i say, Greek mythology too has done its bit in lending some words to the English language???.Now back to the demi-god and the horse...

According to the Greek mythology, when a god or goddess gets married to a human being, their children would be called demi-gods. They were half-human and half-god. Achilles was one such demi-god whose weak-point was his heel. So if some thing is your ACHILLES HEEL, then it means it is your weak point.

Still thinking of the horse?? The expression "A TROJAN HORSE" is derived from the Greek myth of the Trojan War. It basically means a gift that is not what it appears to be.

And tantalizing??? how is that related to Mythology???The story is something like this...
Tantalus had angered the gods by not serving them meat and serving them human flesh instead. So he was banished to the underworld by Zeus, the king of Gods, where he had to stand in a pool of fresh water which had trees bearing fresh fruits. But whenever he tried to pluck the fruit or drink the water, it would move away. He was always disappointed by showing something desirable or in simple words he was TANTALIZED.

Panic is yet another word which has its origins in the Myth. A strange looking Greek-god Pan filled people with fear whenever he played his pipe. So the people always fled in fear or ran in a PANIC when they felt his presence.

With the belief that u were not tantalized reading this post and that this post is anything but a Trojan  horse, i am setting myself again on relentless quest for the next topic. Till then...T for Take care. :)
